The power of our thinking is amazing. Today my two little girls (Lili 7yo, Charli 4yo) had their cross-country running race at school. Last night as I was tucking them into bed, Charli said “Mummy I don’t want to do the cross country”. “Why?” I asked. “Because what if I come last, or fall over?” says Charli.
I think this is sometimes how we can think as adults. Whenever there is potential for something new in our lives, it is easy for fear to creep in. Whether it be getting a new job, taking a risk in business, being vulnerable in a relationship, trying something new, meeting new people, having a glamour photo shoot even! All of these situations require belief in yourself.
‘Don’t let the fear of losing be greater than the excitement of winning.’ ~ Robert Kiyosaki
That was exactly what was happening to Charli. She normally loves running and most things sporty. Last year in her Cross-Country race she came 2nd place for the girls in her age group. She knows she can run. Yet fear crept in, and that fear was stealing her excitement of winning. I explained to her that it doesn’t matter if she wins, loses, or comes somewhere in between. What matters is that she does her best. Our conversation turned fear on its head, and by the time I was leaving the room Charli told me how she was going to win the race!
So did Charli win? No, but she didn’t lose or fall over either. She did her best and came 6th place, and I was so super proud of her! Yes I was proud of her that she came 6th place, but I was most proud of her attitude and effort. She went into the race with a belief in herself, and that thinking propelled her.
‘I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.’~ Muhammad Ali
Even Jesus spoke to his disciples about belief: “if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done.” Matthew 21:21
So let’s start believing in ourselves. You can do it! I believe in YOU!!
